Norfolk Casino, a major, joint project by the Boyd Gaming Corporation and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, has taken a significant step forward with the start of construction earlier this month.

The new Virginia casino, which was started with a $750 million investment, is expected to have its grand opening in 2027 and will have a temporary gaming facility which will be launched later this year.

This temporary venue will offer gambling options to players for the time the casino receives its official casino permit from the state.

Unlike the temporary venue, the main, permanent, resort will feature a 200-room hotel, a live entertainment venue, eight dining and beverage establishments, and an outdoor deck which will have the feature to expand.

Moreover, at the heart of the Norfolk Casino will be the massive gaming floor, which will include 1,500 slot machines and 50 casino table games, specifically tailored to cater to both high-stakes players and casual gamblers alike.

Keith Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming, highlighted the positive economic impact of the Norfolk Casino project, stating that it will be a major entertainment destination for the region.

Additionally, Smith projected that the $750 million investment will generate billions in economic activity for Norfolk and the greater Hampton Roads area, as well as create 1,700 job opportunities during the construction, and hundreds more permanent positions after the project is finished.

Construction of the resort is being managed by Norfolk-based S.B. Ballard Construction Company and Yates Construction, operating under a joint venture known as Yates/Ballard.

Uri Clinton, Boyd’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, expressed confidence in the construction team, highlighting their expertise in delivering the waterfront casino resort on schedule and without issues.
