Anthony and Laura Lee Admit to Cheating Under Gambling Act as Southwark Crown Court Prepares for October Sentencing
Anthony Lee, the Conservative Party’s former Director of Campaigning, and his wife Laura Lee, formerly Saunders, have pleaded guilty to offenses of cheating under section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005. Anthony Lee entered guilty pleas to two offenses under section 42(1)(a) and 42(1)(b), while Laura Lee pleaded guilty to one offense under section 42(1)(a).
The charges stem from confidential internal discussions held at 10 Downing Street and Conservative Campaign Headquarters regarding the timing of the 2024 General Election. Before then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak publicly announced the July 4 election date on May 22, 2024, specialized markets had been opened by betting operators regarding when the vote would be called.
As reported by the Gambling Commission, by leveraging his senior role, Anthony Lee accessed sensitive information regarding the election schedule, placed bets, and shared the confidential details with his wife. Laura Lee, who served as Head of International for the party and stood as the parliamentary candidate for Bristol North-West, subsequently used that inside information to place her own bets.
Upcoming Sentencing and Broader Legal Proceedings
The legal fallout from the election betting scandal continues to progress through the UK courts. Anthony Lee, Laura Lee, and Amy Hind are scheduled to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on October 23, 2026. Meanwhile, Craig Williams entered a guilty plea previously on June 29 and awaits sentencing at a later date, while separate trials for ten remaining defendants are slated for September 2027 and January 2028.
