20-Year-Old Striker Accused of Placing 61 Bets Over a 15-Month Period
Everton FC forward Martin Sherif has been formally charged with breaching the Football Association’s (FA) betting rules across a 15-month span. Sherif, who originally joined Everton’s youth academy in 2019 from Dutch club Almere City, is alleged to have placed 61 bets on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.
Although called up to Everton‘s first team midway through the 2024/25 season, the 20-year-old Liberian-born forward is yet to make a competitive first-team appearance. Instead, he gained senior experience during two loan spells in League One last season with Rotherham United and Port Vale, scoring four league goals across 24 appearances before both clubs suffered relegation to League Two. Sherif has until Monday to submit his response to the charges.

The allegations highlight ongoing scrutiny regarding football associations’ strict regulations on gambling for professional athletes. The charges against Sherif represent the most prominent instance of an English-based player facing FA betting rule violations since Sandro Tonali in 2024. Tonali received a 10-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and a two-month suspension from the English FA following involvement in an illegal gambling ring.
Other notable historical cases include the 2023 suspensions of Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo (five months) and Brentford forward Ivan Toney (eight months) for placing bets while playing in lower divisions.
Furthermore, the situation has reignited discussions surrounding football’s commercial relationships with gambling operators. Throughout the duration of Sherif’s alleged betting activity, Everton maintained affiliations with gambling operator Stake. While Premier League regulations have since banned front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships, moving Stake to a sleeve partnership role for Everton, similar controversies previously surfaced during Ivan Toney’s ban while Brentford featured Hollywood Bets on their jerseys.
