Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) Extends Operating Permits Through to 2031 Ahead of October Deadline
The Dutch gambling regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has officially begun granting renewed five-year operating permits to online gambling platforms ahead of a critical deadline on 1 October 2026. This upcoming cutoff marks the formal expiration of the initial five-year licences that were awarded when the Netherlands first opened its regulated digital gaming market in October 2021.
Following a comprehensive review process conducted by the regulatory watchdog, several major industry players, including state-backed Holland Casino, TOTO Online, and Belgian brand Bingoal, have successfully secured approvals to extend their market presence through to 2031. Meanwhile, other prominent operators, such as bet365, Kansino, BetCity, and Fair Play, are required to submit complete applications and meet strict regulatory standards before the 1 October deadline in order to maintain uninterrupted business operations within the jurisdiction.
Commenting on the milestone approval, Bingoal released a formal statement:
“We are incredibly proud to announce that Bingoal’s Dutch licence has officially been renewed by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) for another five years. Having been among the first operators to receive a licence in 2021, we are proud to once again be among the first to successfully complete the renewal process.”
Navigating a Significantly Altered Regulatory Landscape
Operators securing their second licensing period are entering a vastly different regulatory environment compared to the framework established during the market’s initial 2021 launch. Over recent years, Dutch authorities have systematically tightened market controls by implementing a ban on public figure endorsements in gambling promotions, introducing strict prohibitions on untargeted advertising, and enforcing a complete ban on sports team sponsorships.
Highlighting the ongoing balance between maintaining player protection and ensuring market health, Petra de Ruiter, Chief Executive Officer of Holland Casino, stated:
