Software giant Yggdrasil Gaming has significantly deepened its footprint in the high-growth market of South Africa.

Software giant Yggdrasil Gaming has significantly deepened its footprint in the high-growth market of South Africa.

Through two new distribution deals with SportyBet and Playco.za, the developer has launched over 100 of its marquee titles, including fan favorites like MexoMax and Vikings Go to Olympus.

Tapping into a €75 Billion Turnover Market

Yggdrasil’s expansion is backed by explosive data from the National Gaming Board, which reported that the South African iGaming sector generated €75.5 billion in turnover during the 2024/25 period. By partnering with established regional brands, Yggdrasil aims to capture a leading share of this booming digital economy.

Giovanni Fodera, Regional Manager at Yggdrasil, commented on the milestone:

“South Africa is a strategically important market for Yggdrasil, and going live with established brands such as SportyBet and Playco.za is a significant achievement for the company. These partnerships enhance our regional presence, extend the reach of our content and reflect the strong momentum we are building across Africa.”

Navigating the 29% Effective Tax Debate

The expansion arrives as South Africa’s National Treasury weighs a proposed 20% national tax on gross gaming revenue (GGR) for online activity.

When combined with existing provincial levies (6%–9%), operators could face an effective tax rate of 26% to 29%. While the Ministry of Finance argues the tax is necessary to mitigate social harm, the iGaming sector awaits a final decision following the close of public consultations in late February.
